Q: What is the smartest energy decision you have made? In an effort to save energy while keeping costs low, we replaced appliances in the kitchen and laundry room to ENERGY STAR models. We also replaced our toilets to a high efficiency brand, which use twenty percent less water. Smart decisions are also made in small ways such as unplugging countertop appliances, shutting off lights, and using Compact Fluorescent light bulbs in every room.
Q: How has this decision affected your lifestyle and your wallet for the better? This decision has made a positive impact on the entire family. My children are learning how to reduce energy while helping the environment, and my husband and I have noticed a significant reduction in our water and electric bills.
Q: Are you surprised at the big changes that came from making a small change? I was not only surprised, but impressed. The small changes not only helped reduce overall household costs, but led me to use better products. The light bulbs last twice as long, and the ENERGY STAR front load washer hold more laundry per load.
Q: What led you to make the decision in the first place? With an active family of four, we felt it was important to find practical ways to conserve energy. We also wanted to be good role models to our children. To help achieve these goals, we decided to sign up for an energy audit which provided tips and ideas on how to maximize household energy and cut costs.
Q: How have you shared your experience with others? I think whenever you save money, and feel good about the decisions you’ve made, it’s hard not to share the news! We’ve talked to our friends and neighbors about the changes we’ve made. We’ve also received some great ideas in return, which has been very helpful. Overall it’s been a wonderful experience, and one we’ve been happy to share with others.
